Solar Viejo Rioja

Winery Since 1937

The winery was founded in 1937 in the walled medieval village of Laguardia in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. Today generations of winemaking tradition combine with new ideas, techniques and equipment to make modern Rioja wines with the unmistakable character of one of Spain's best-known regions. Winemaker Vanesa Insausti has been making wine here since 2007, looking to produce a modern style of Rioja with perfect balance between oak and fruit.

Solar Viejo Tempranillo

Solar Viejo Tempranillo
100% Tempranillo 2016.

Smell

Red fruit, including strawberry, raspberry and cherry, with a green pepper note.

Taste

A young and easy-drinking red Rioja. Light on the palate, with fresh, juicy red and black fruit flavors.

Pairing

Very versatile. Rice and pasta dishes, tapas, mild cheeses, cured meats and ham.

Solar Viejo Crianza

Solar Viejo Crianza
100% Tempranillo 2014.

Smell

Red and black fruit, coffee and spice. Floral hints of violet.

Taste

Crianza is a style of Rioja that's aged for at least two years. This spends 12 months in oak barrels, giving notes of vanilla and spice over raspberry and blackberry fruit.

Pairing

Red meat, barbecued burgers and ribs, chorizo and lamb casseroles.

Solar Viejo Reserva

Solar Viejo Reserva
85% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano. 2012.

Smell

Complex with dark fruit, chocolate, coffee, spice, violets and stone fruit.

Taste

Rioja reservas are aged for at least three years. This is a powerful wine with black currant and spice flavours, plus grippy tannins that are perfect for food.

Pairing

Roasts and hearty red meat dishes, seasonal game dishes, mature cheese.

Solar Viejo Blanco

Solar Viejo Blanco
60% Viura, 40% Chardonnay. 2016.

Smell

Pretty notes of white flowers, followed by fresh lemon and tropical fruits.

Taste

A modern and food-friendly white Rioja. Fresh and lively in the mouth, with crisp citrus flavours that burst out of the glass.

Pairing

White fish dishes and seafood, cheese, chicken and creamy pasta dishes.
